With The Roman, Netflix revisits the world of Las Vegas gambling drama, assembling a cast with strong ties to casino cinema. Oscar Isaac headlines the series as Robert “Bobby Red” Redman, with Betty Gilpin, Alec Baldwin, and David Costabile also starring.
The plot focuses on modern-day Las Vegas, moving away from the mob-era backdrop of Casino. Netflix characterizes the hour-long drama as taking place in the “high-stakes, sharp-elbowed present-day Las Vegas casino business, which is a modernized but still dangerous version of the legendary city.”
Isaac’s character is a hotel casino president fighting to maintain his dominant status. According to Netflix, Redman is “president of the hottest hotel casino in town. Redman has to make some long odds moves to try and secure his position and take more ground.”
This role marks a return to gambling-themed stories for Isaac, following his lead role in 2021’s The Card Counter. He previously won a Golden Globe in 2015 for Show Me a Hero.
Gilpin will portray Marla Blake, Bobby’s wife. Netflix describes her as “a brilliant, highly connected lawyer who knows how to navigate the town’s darkest corners just as well as her husband.” Gilpin’s credits include GLOW, Nurse Jackie, and Death by Lightning.
Baldwin assumes the part of Paul “Primo” Clark, the longstanding chairman of the series’ gaming organization and a paternal influence on Bobby. A three-time Emmy and Golden Globe winner, Baldwin received an Oscar nomination for 2003’s The Cooler.
Costabile, recognized for Suits and Breaking Bad, plays Bill Saverick, the operator of a competing casino. This character introduces a direct rival for Bobby Redman, creating an inherent conflict within the casino industry for the series.
The production team behind The Roman brings significant gambling-drama expertise. Martin Scorsese serves as a producer, having directed and co-written 1995’s Casino. J.C. Chandor, director of Triple Frontier and A Most Violent Year, will direct. Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the minds behind Rounders, are the creators, showrunners, and executive producers.
